FAMINE THREAT
MEASURESIN BENGAL GLOOMY CROP PROSPECTS Recd. 6 p.m. London, Sept. 5. Immediate measures are necessary to avert another famine in Bengal, where the food situation is causing serious anxiety, said Dr. Pramathanah Banerjea, leader of the Nationalist Party, in a cable to Lord Pcthick Lawrence, Secretary for India. Mr. Banerjoa_added that the early Bengal crop had been largely destroyed by drought and floods. The prospects for the main crop were gloomy. Considerable stocks of food and grains had deteriorated through defective storage. Hungry, half-naked people were beginning to invade Calcutta. Signs similar to those of 1943 were visible.
