SOCIAL AFTERNOON WIND-UP OF S.V.P. PROJECT. On Friday, August .31, a social afternon was arranged as a wind-up on the S.V.P. project at Ohakune, when approximately 30 men ceased employment. The project is closing down this year, alter tnree seasons ot production, and now only a skeleton staff o£ approximately 18 men is left to sow the area down in grass before it. is handed over to the Rehabilitation Committee for returned soldiers’ farms. The afternoon was a delinite success. Mr. J. F. Randell (overseer) apologised lor the absence of the instructor in agriculture, Mr. A. R. Dingwall, who was detained in the Rangitikei portion of his district. In a speech o£ thanks to the departing men, Mr. Randell offered‘his personal thanks lor the fine service the men had given while working under him. He mentioned the fact that, the Ohakune project had created records in | production over the many other proiects that had operated throughout. New Zealand during the war years. He said that the highest average acreage looked after per man, -by any other project,, was one man to five acres, while at Ohakune the average was one man to eight acres. Production. — The average on any other project did not exceed 201 b?. of vegetables per man. while at Ohakune the average was 901bs. per man per day. MUSICAL ITEMS

A number of most enjoyable musical items were presented during the afternoon. They included songs by Messrs J. Randell. J. Quirk, A. L. Parkes and L. O’Connell, while a trio - Messrs. R. and J. Pirie and D. Brandon—displayed excellent talent. Mr. G. Rogers caused much amusement with his "snake dance." Of the staff of 48. 30 men ceased employment, leaving 18 men to sow Ihe area in grass. The majority q£ the men leaving the project will find employment locally, only a very few leaving the district.
