MARTON NOTES

THE VICTORY HALL OFFICIAL OPENING ARRANGED. The Victory Hall will be officially opened by the Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell) at a grand dance on Thursday, April 26. Complete arrangements have been made for the dance, the music for which will be provided by a firstclass band orchestra of six instrumentalists. A meeting of all persons interested in connection with the supper will be held in the Victory Hall on Tuesday, April 17 at 7 o’clock. A souvenir ticket is io be printed for the dance, the prices being 7s 6d I double ticket, and 5s single ticket. | A list of charges for the hire of the hall was drawn up. The “shop” will be hold on Tuesday, April 24, in the shop recently occupied by Mr. Street at High Street and Broadway corner. The ladies are very busily engaged in making goods for the different stalls. The committee desire to thank Messrs Cobham and Sons for the gift of a fireside chair, Mr. A. W. Shield for a table ping-pong set, and to Messi's G. Lewis and J. T. Mcllwaine for their practical assistance at the hall. Mr. T. Barton's store will be the booking office for the hire of the hall, and Mr. J. D. Gorrie has kindly consented to act as honorary caretaker for the time being. Resolutions in connection with the vesting of the hall in the names of the Marton Borough Council and trustees were carried, and will be forwarded to the Marton Borough Council for its approval. Mr. T. Barton presided over Messrs F. Purnell, J. D. Gorrie, J. T. Mcllwaine, H. L. Grut, A. Way, J. V. Flowers, J. Williamson, Mrs. F. Brice and Miss B. Tolley at a meeting of the management committee on Tuesday evening. MARTON RED CROSS. The annual Detachment Meeting of Voluntary Aids and Transport Section was held last Thursday evening in the Red Cross rooms. Mrs. Gardiner presided over a good muster of members. Mrs. Nigel Williams was welcomed as the new lady superintendent, and sured of every support in her new position. The V.A.D. report showed that the year had been quite a busy one, V.A.O.’s having done private nursing and also meeting trains of sick and wounded. The Transport Section reported an increasingly active year, the total mileage being 6800 miles. The report of Miss H. I. Crooke, director- : general of V.A.D.’s, who visited us at • the end of last year, was very encouraging and showed that Marton was well up to the mark in efficiency and appearance. Election of officers resulted: —Head . section leader, Miss A. Ingle; section leader, Miss V. Rawson; quartermaster, Miss Howard; assistant quartermaster, Mrs. H. R. Gaisford; secretary, Miss. L. Hopkins. Transport Section.—Commandant, Mrs. Fenwicke; section leader, Mrs. Thorp; section leader, Mrs. Church; quartermaster, Miss Awdry; secretary, 1 Miss Kitcat. Members were notified that the Home Nursing lectures would start on Tuesday, April 17, at 7.30 p.m. in the ■ Red Cross rooms. Mrs. Ryan, who ' returned last year from nursing in the Middle East, has very kindly consent- . ed to conduct these lectures. All new members are cordially invited to attend, also any older members are asked to come along, though under no obligation to sit the exams. A parade will be hold in the Churcn of England on Sunday, April 15, at 7 p.m. V.A.D.’s and Transport Sections are asked to assemble at the church at 6.45 p.m. After the business of the meeting was over a talk was given by Mrs. J. Watts, wife of Squadron-Leader J. Watts, of Marton, on some of her experiences of nursing in England at the beginning of the war. This was interspersed with amusing incidents and proved very interesting. At the conclusion of the evening the .guests of honour, Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. Watts, were entertained at supper. UNITED SERVICES CLUB. The monthly committee meeting of the United Services Club was held in the Marton Jockey Club’s rooms on Monday. Mrs. G. B. Gregory presided over Mesdames Dixon, Simpson, Gorringe. Oliver, Anderson, Heidrich, Watts, Robertson and Christensen (organiser). The books showed that a total of 109 members of the Forces used the club. It was decided that in future no hot meals will be served. Tea and cakes, etc., will always.be provided. The next meeting will be held on May 1. ST. STEPHEN’S LADIES’ GUILD. All members of St. Stephen’s Ladies' Guild are asked to attend the annual meeting, which will be held in the Parish Hall, Marton, on Thursday, April 19, at 2.30 p.m., when important business will be discussed. BOWLING CLUB. The Marton Bow.ing Club's competitions were finalised on r £uesday evening, when F. Nicol and S. Goebel beat A. Stenhouse and A. Caverhill by 24 to 15 in the A and B pairs. WOMEN’S WAR SERVICES AUXILIARY At a meeting of the above committee at Marton on Monday, advice was received that Mrs. W. Nash is now their president * replacing the late Mrs P. Fraser. It was decided that the W.W.S.A. would not parade on Anzac Day. More people have been attending the Sewing Circle. Still more are required and would be welcomed. The following letter was received from the National Utilisation of Waste Depot, Wellington:—“We are sending a large bale of clothing to you to-day, and if you could let us know how many garments you can handleeach week we can keep you supplied. The bale contains garments to be mended: 20 shirts, 12 singlets, 2 dozen underpants and also 200 pairs of socks. As we return all these garments to the Army, we would like them mended as carefully as possible, as they are needed urgently.” ACCLIMATISATION S K lETY. The Marton sub-commiilee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society will hold its annual general meeting in the Clifton Hall, Bubs, on Wednesday, April 18, at 8 o'clock. Election of oliicers and general business. The committee meets at. 7.30 p.m.
