Twelve Months Ago. Twelve months ago to-day the Badogiio Government declared Rome an "open city.” There was another big raid by the Bomber Command on Milan, and Berlin was raided by Mosquitos. The Russians captured Karachev. An American force seized Vella Lavella in the New Georgia group. Destruction of Wild Life. The destruction of 251 rats and cats on Stewart Island is recorded in the annual report of the Department oi internal Affairs. Last year hunters employed by the department in the South Island also destroyed 15,282 deer, 70 th ar, 12 chamo._s, 246 goats and 16 pigs. In the previous year 0 the hunters destroyed 10,902 deer, 458 thar, 59 chamois and 203 goats. Six £5O Notes Found. Six £5O notes, believed to be portion of a large sum which has been missing in Gisborne for several days, have been delivered to the police, to whom Ng Cheung Hue had reported the loss of a wallet containing £4lO left in the back of a Chinese shop. One £5O note and £6O in other denominations are still messing. College Rugby. A seven-a-side Rugby tournament between teams representing the provinces in which the boys live, was played at the Wanganui Collegiate School yesterday. Wanganui A won the senior section and Taranaki the junior. A Rugby fifteen match between Technical College and Technical Hostel resulted in a draw, 5-all, after a rug.ged game. Unlicensed Drivers. "In the event of an accident there can be no claim on an insurance company if the driver of a car is unlicensed,” commented Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesterday, when several cases came before him of m.otorists afiling to renew their driver’s licences. In most cases the city traffic inspector, Mr. H. E. Tipper, prosecuted on behalf of the City Council, and a fine of £l, with costs, was imposed. Rotary Club. Presided over by Mr. W. J. Gilbert, the weekly luncheon of the Wanganui Rotary Club was held yesterday, visitors were Messrs. F. Lovett (Palmerston North), H. A. Austin (Auckland) and S. Read (Hamilton). The guest speaker was the Rev. H. W. Austin, of the Wanganui Collegiate School, who deputised for LieutenantColonel H. E. Gilbert, D. 5.0., who was unable to be present. The subject of Rev. Austin’s address was "Religious Aspects of Education.” The vote of thank# was moved by Mr. S. Timbs.
More Coal Expected. «7 Ft i r S er conss gnments of coal from West Coast mines are due at Wanganui this week. The coastal steamer Rolmlea was to have left Westport last night with 600 tons for local discharge, and is expected at Castlecliff to-night, or early to-morrow. She will be followed by the Anchor Company's collier Rata, scheduled to load 800 tons at Greymouth to-morrow. The Rata is expected about Friday morning andl on completion of discharge at Castlechff sails the following dav on her return to the West Coast. The Titoki, which was to have loaded at Greymouth for Wanganui to-dav, has been cancelled, her trip being taken by the Rata.
