THE MEDITERRANEAN
GROWING ALLIED CONVOYS NAVAL SUPREMACY. Reed. 6.30 p.m. London. May 27. In one month of this year 11,500.000 tons of Allied shipping was convoyed across the Mediterranean. This is revealed by Admiral Sir Andrew Cu'tingham, Allied Naval Commander in that area, in his first Press conference since the opening of the Italian campaign. He added that the percentage of Allied losses in the Mediterranean in three months was .28 per cent. Two thousand merchantmen monthly made voyages between Mediterranean ports. The daily average was 230. Admiral Cunningham emphasised that vast amounts of raw materials had now passed through the Mediterranean on their way to Britain. “I have lost the habit of differentiating between the Royal Navy and the United States Navy,” he said. “It does not even enter my mind. Both the navies are one and indivisible. I hope they wilt always remain so.”
