SHIPS LAUNCHED IN AUSTRALIA
TWO NEW 9000-TON VESSELS Recd. 7 p.m. Melbourne, April 23. Two 9000-1 on freighters were launched at Australian shipyards yesterday. Three vessels of this class have been commissioned for some time, and eight others are in various stages of construction. The Minister for the Navy, Mr. Makin, said the ships were 90 per cent. Australian. This applied to hulls, engines and fittings. He announced that in the 20 months up to the end of March, nearly 6000 merchant vesels, aggregating more than 4,00(1,000 tons, had undergone repairs and maintenance at Australian yards. During the same period 832 ships, totalling about 2,900.000 tons, had been dry-docked or slipped.
