SERVICES’ CLUB FAREWELL TO MRS. NEWELL A farewell was tendered to Mrs. G. G. Newell, who -has acted as secretary of the Combined Services’ Club for some time past. The function took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Lounge tearooms. Mrs. G. B. Gregory, president of the club, briefly expressed good wishes to Mrs. Newell, who is returning to Wairoa, and stated that the club regretted losing the services of such an obliging and capable secretary. Many apologies were read from those unable to be present. Mrs. Christensen endorsed Mrs. Glory’s remarks and presented Mrs. with a shoulder spray, a gift, from Mrs. Duncan Simpson, who was unavoidably absent. Mrs. Newell was also presented with a small gift, as a tangible token from the supporters of the club, in appreciation of the work she had so capably carried out. MR. G. G. NEWELL FAREWELLED On the eve of his departure for Wairoa, where he has been appointed manager of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd , Mr. G. G. Newell was met by a representative gathering of clients of the Marton branch of the bank. Many speakers paid tribute to his sterling qualities and offered good wishes for his future career. Mr. Newell, in accepting a well-filed wallet from the gathering, expressed his regret at having to leave Marton, where he had many friends. Opportunity was taken to welcome the incoming manager, Mr. H. J. Nash, who suitably responded. MARTON SCOTTISH SOCIETY VISIT OF WANGANUI PIPE BAND The Marton Scottish Society committee met on Friday night to make final arrangements for the visit of the Wanganui Pipe Band on Wednesday, .May 3, at the Empire Hall. The band will arrive in town in time to parade in Broadway before the concert. Consideration is given to those who do not dance, in that the concert will take the first part of the programme, with supper, and old-time dancing to follow. Miss Matthews' school of dancing will provide national and classical dancing, and also vocalists and instrumentalists from Wanganui. A great night for old and young. WELLINGTON ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING, MARTON COMMITTEE The annual meeting of the Marton sub-committee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society will be held to-night in the Marton Jockey Club’s Rooms, at 8 o’clock. Reports from the Bulls and Marton sub-committees j will be presented, election of officers, ' and important matters in connection with the’shooting season be disI cussed. MARTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL | MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS The annual meeting of householders I will be held to-night at the Marton | District High School assembly room at 18 o'clock. Eleven nominations have been received and as only nine members are required an election will be held. Those nominated are: H. J. Cameron, J. V. Flowers, A. Gnacie, G. W. Grey, R. A. Griffin, A. W. Setford. G. H. Smith, G. C. Thomas, A. S. Todd, J. T. K. Vance and A. L. Williams. The sitting committee are al: seeking re-election, with the addition of Messrs. A. W. Setford, G. H. Smith and R. A. Griffin. It is hoped that there will be a large attendance of householders to show their appreciation of the good work carried out by the committee. CIVIC THEATRE, MARTON “KEEPER OF THE FLAME” Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn figure in a drama of newspaperdom for the second time in “Keeper of the Flame,” Metro-Goldwyn-May-er’s graphic adaptation of I. A. R. Wylie’s best-selling novel. Unlike “Woman of the Year,” which was comedy, however, the new picture is an intensely dramatic one dealing with America under to-day’s wartime conditions. Tracy, as a newspaperman, investigating the death of a noted American leader, falls in love with his widow played by Katharine Hepburn, and a dramatic situation eventuates when his investigations turn the finger of suspicion on her. POPPY DAY 1 A RECORD SALE The sale of poppies in Marton constituted a record. The Boy Scouts, under the supervision of Mr. Middleton, did remarkably good work, and disposed of 2200 poppies to the value of £llO. The Boy Scouts lost no opportunity of disposing of their poppies, and canvassed Marton and the Mar-1 ton Junction with great success.
