FAR EAST WAR
PREDICTIONS MADE JAPANESE HARD TO BEAT U.S. WILL BE DOMINANT POSTWAR PACIFIC POWER. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Reed. 9 p.m. New York, April 19. The United Press Far-Eastern manager, Mr. K. Morris, arriving from the Orient, gives a composite picture ot the situation obtained from high military, political and diplomatic , Firstly, he says, the defeat of Japan will require three to five years after the defeat of Germany, mainly because the Japanese have developed extensive war industries and most powefful military bases on the Asiatic mainland. Secondly, the Japanese drive towards India is spectacular, but is only limited in importance, the enemy simply attempting a strong thrust to counter the British-American opera,.o is in north Burma. Thirdly, the United States will be the uommant Pacific power alter thc war and it is taken for granted that the United States will retain peimanent control of mandated islands. Fourthly, British power will certainly be restored in Burma. Malay, Singapore and Hongkong; the Dutch to regain their East Indies and China to share leadership of Asia with Britain and Russia, while Japan is reduced to a third-class power. Fifthly, the establishment of a stable peace will tax Allied statesmanship to the utmost. However, successful Allied collaboration in Europe after the defeat of Germany should mean an equally successful pattern for Asia.
