SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED (0.C.) Hunt’erville, March 8. In the Tovm Hall last evening three soldiers and an aircraftsman on special leave were entertained at a social and dance by the Hunterville and Rata Patriotic Committees. There was the usual large attendance. Music was provided by the Midnight Revellers and Mr. A. McAlly was M.C. Prior to supper speeches were made by Mr. R. /. Gordon (chairman of Ihe Hunterville Patriotic Committee), Mr., R. M. $. Jones (president of the R.S.A.) and Mr.' C. F. McManaway (chairman of the Rata Patriotic Committee). In wishing the young men Godspeed and a safe return the speakers felt confident that they would be worthy of the traditions of the 2d. N.Z.E.F. The personnel entertained were: Sgt. T. Grter? (Rata), Gnrs. P. Irwin and D. McLachlan and A/c. K. Lynch, each of whom briefly replied. Prior to the dance, these men, together with those recently returned from the Middle East, were entertained at a dinner by the local R.S.A. Mr. R. M. S. Jones presided and those going away and those returned were enthusiastically toasted. GENERAL ITEMS. A very pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Mrs. Holtord, when members of the W.W.S.A. met to farewell Miss Lorna McGowan on the eve of her departure to take up residence in Auckland. Following games and competitions Mrs. R. A. Gordon presented Miss McGowan with a writing companion as a token of esteem. Mr. W. Volkerling, of Mt. Curl, is at present an inmate of the local hospital, having fracture a leg while working on his farm. To mark the return home from overseas, of their son (Pte. John 111ston), Mr. and Mrs. B. Illston entertained a large number of friends at a party to-night. The guests included other soldiers in the district recently returned from the Middle East.
