BOROUGH AFFAIRS EMERGENCY HOSPITAL AT WANGAEHU The secretary of the Wangaehu Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society. Mrs. M. Grant, wrote to the council - requesting the closing of the emergency hospital at Wangaehu, stating that some two years ago Mrs. M. Bignell kindly lent two rooms in her house to be used as an , emergency hospital it’ necessary. Mrs. Bigneil has now expressed a wish that she would like the Use of her rooms again as there appears to be little chance of them being needed now. Arrangements could probably be made to store the hospital equipment at some other place if required later in an epidemic.—The council was quite agreeable to the closing of the emergency hospital, and expressed thanks to Mrs. Bigneil and the committee for their valuable assistance in the past. Appreciation of Services. The Mayor referred to the coming departure of Mr. F. Mairs postmaster, who has co-operated with the council in connection with E.P.S. work and has been helpful in any movement that has required his assistance. These remarks were endorsed by councillors, and the following resolution was carried:— J'That this council places on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered by Mr. F. Mairs, postmaster, during his term at Martion. His co-operation with the Borough Council on E.P.S. and other civic affairs has been very highly valued. The council wishes Mr. Mairs every possible success in his duties as chief postmaster at Westport.” A copy of the resolution is to be sent to the Director-General, C.P.0., Wellington. Civic Theatre Exits. A letter was read from Mrs. W. Simpson, stating that her daughter was injured through a fall from the sloping floor exit from the Civic Theatre on High Street through the lights not being turned on till after the audience had started to leave, and suggesting that the sloping exits should be painted white. —The council expressed its sincere regret at the unfortunate accident and would take into favourable consideration the painting of the floor exits. Borough Boundary Expenditure. The Rangitikei County Council wrote asking the council to advise particulars of the proposed work on boundary roads at the beginning of the financial year, in order that adequate provision can be made in the council’s estimates. —The council decided that for the coming financial year it is proposed to re-deck Hawkestone Road bridge and tar-seal Main Street, and asking the Rangitikei County Council to make provision in its estimates for half cost o-f these works.

Calico Line Water Main. The overseer reported on Calico Line water main, stating that there are 85 chains of 3in. steel pipes, and ten chains of this main have given considerable trouble during the past two years, 38 leaks having to be repaired as well as the road being broken tip. He considered that these ten chains of pipes should be renewed before the County Council proceeded with the tar-sealing of this road, and submitted the iollowing estimates: To replace with 3in. galvanised pipe, £300; to replace with 4in, steel pipes, £207 16s.—It was decided to call a meeting of all ratepayers on Calico Line interested at the Borough Council Chambers on Thursday, March 16, at 7.30 p.m. Borough Rates.

The town clerk submitted a report on the rates struck (excluding foreign special) for the current year, which amounted to £8163 2s Id and of this amount £7883 15s 5d has been collected, equal to 96.57 per cent, of the rates struck. The total rates collected from all sources during this period amounted to £8327 12s 8d or £164 10s 7d in excess of the total rates struck for the year ending March 31, 1944. On April 1, 1943, outstandings for the three years, 1940-41-42 amounted to £795 5s Id, and arrears collected during the year from all sources amount to £44s*os Id. Old arrears collected and reinstated amounted to £l6 Id. Rates outstanding are as follows: 1943, £154 18s 3d; 1942, £144 18s 7d; 1941, £66 9s 2d—total, £366 6s. In respect of these arrears no less than £215 9s 5d refers to property owned by 11 ratepayers, while many owners are absentees. The town clerk was congratulated by the councillors on the excellent manner in which he had collected the rates and a resolution to that effect was carried unanimously. General Business. The overseer reported that the reservoir is holding 15ft. 9in. of water and embankments are in good order. It was decided to call fresh tenders for the custodianship of the Civic Theatre. A circular letter was received from the Medical Officer of Health relative to organisation and control in the event of a national disaster or epidemic.—Further information is to be obtained before any action can be taken. Mr. A. C. Birch wrote apologising for the illegal use of the water supply, which was accepted. The Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell) presided over Crs. G. B. Gregory. T. Barton, K. Fowler, W. J. Mogridge, J. R. Howard, A. Mclndoe, A. J. B. Sicely, K. Williams, and Mr. C. C. McDonald (town clerk). MARTON BOWLING CLUB The final of the full-rink championship will be played on Saturday between Dixon, McDonald, Nuttall, Hamer and Dashwood (sub.), Hutton, Gibbs, Caverhill. An informal meeting of members will be held in the club's pavilion on Monday, March 20, at 7.30 p.m., for a general discussion. Rotary Club day has been fixed for March 18. Particulars later. An open tournament will be held on Sunday. March 26, commencing at 9.15 a.m. Marton entries close on March 18. ST. ANDREW’S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Harvest thanksgiving services will be held in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Marton, next Sunday, March 12. at 11 a.m., and at the Marton Junction Presbyterian Church at 2.30 p.m. Gifts of produce of all kinds will be welcome. MARTON R.S.A. “SMOKO.” The annual “smoko” and welcome home to returned 2nd. N.Z.E.F. me/, will be held in the Druids’ Hall Marton, to-morrow (Saturday) evening at 8 o'clock. An excellent programme by talented artists has been arranged. CIVIC THEATRE, MARTON Errol Flynn is back to bring more thrills and adventure to movie fans, but. this time he swaps his bow and arrow for top hat and tails. He is starerd in the role of a writer of mystery stories and amateur sleuth combined- in the Warner Bros, comedymystery film, “Footsteps in the Dark.”

Co-starred with Flynn is lovely Brenda Marshall, whose performance in “The Sea Hawk” brought raves from critics and public alike.
