Mrs. N B. Barkman, King’s Avenue, Goiwille, hag been staying at Stratford for a few weeks. Mrs. M. Anderson and family, Cambridge Street, returned yesterday from Auckland. Mrs. R. McCallum, Palmerston North, is visiting her mother, Mrs. M. G. Werry. St. John’s Hill. Miss Moyna Macken, of Takapuna, Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. C. Aitken, Carlton Avenue. Mrs. P. H. Ward, Konini Street, has returned from a holiday visit to Wellington. Misses F. and G. Sampson, Somme Parade, Upper Aramoho, and Miss Sewell, will leave during the week-end for a holiday at Taupo. Mrs. Nigel Williams and family, Selwyn Street, are visiting Hawke s Bay. Mrs. Amelia Buller, of Niblett Street, is making a good recovery from her recent motor accident and nas returned home from the hospital. • HITHER AND THITHER. Wanganui Croquet Club. An announcement elsewhere in this issue states that there are a lew vacancies in the Wanganui Croquet Club and intending members are invited to visit the lawns during the week, commencing January 19, when the New Zealand championships will be in progress. Beautifully situated in Victoria i J ark, St. John’s Hill, the club has the largest area of croquet lawns south of the Equator. The game of croquet is scientific and healtnful and is attracting even more men and women to its ranks. Red Army Nurses.

Not only do Red Army nurses attend the wounded, but in intervals of battle build the hospitals, said Mr. R. Wutson-Jones, one of a group ot British surgeons who recently visited the Soviet Union. One of the front line hospitals he visited was built on land which only a few months ago was occupied by the enemy. Now a 2000bed noipital has almost been completed by nurses, who are obviously skilled in the use of the saw, the plane, and the spirit level. Honour For Three Women. Some time ago the executive of the Christchurch Returned Services’ sociation elected to honorary life mhibership of the association Wfee women who have for many years assisted it with its various appeals and in visiting sick soldiers in hospital. They were Mesdames J. S. Kelly and A. I. Rattray and Miss M. G. Brown. Opportunity was taken recently to present the badges to Mesdames Rattray and Kelly at their homes by the president of the association, Mr. Colin Miln, and the secretary, Mr. E. F. Willcox. A badge is to be presented to Miss Brown later. Mrs. Kelly’s activitie> in the interests of returned soldiers date back to 1915. Visitors For N.Z. Croquet Championships. Among the croquet players coming to Wanganui to take part in the New Zealand croquet championships, which commence next Wednesday, will be Mrs. J.
