WOMEN WAR WORKERS
AWARDED EMPIRE MEDALS
Recd. 6 p.m. London, Jan. 5. Among many British war workers who have-just been honoured with the award of the British Empire Medal are two women, one a middle-aged housewife, and the other a young Welsh girl. Mrs. Buttle, aged 42, helps to fill ammunition for aircraft cannon. She has never had a day off from work except her annual leave, and since she started at the factory has taken certificates for home nursing and first aid. She has had eight children and does her own housework. Winifred Morgan is a 28-year-old Welsh girl. She worked in a Royal Ordnance factory and one day when something in the factory went wrong all the girls were told to leave. All did so except Miss Morgan, who went to find out what had happened. As she reached to pick up a faulty detonator it exploded and she was badly hurt. The explosion blinded her.
