When he fell from a horse-drawn cart in Fitzneroert Avenue shortly .before 4.30 p.m. yesterday, Mr. C. Brush, Fox Road, received injuries to his back. He was taken to the Wanganui Hospital by the St. John Free Ambulance. Repatriated Prisoners Return. Among a list of repatriated prisoners of war who recently returned to New Zealand appear the names of three Wanganui men and two Marton men. They are: Privates William John Browne, Robert James Gordon and Hendey Joseph, of Wanganui; Thomas David Kenzie and Roy James Nielsen, of Marton.

Decline in Grass Fires. Personnel of the Wanganui Fire Brigade had a spell from attending grass fires yesterday, only one call being received. This was at 2.15 p.m., when a machine from the Castlecliff sub-station turned out to a fire in Todd Street, where growth in a section was burning. A lead of hose was used and no property damage resulted.

Fishing at Wanganui. Fine weather this week has attracted a large number of fishermen to Castlecliff and the Town Wharf, where herrings are plentiful. Some good catches have been obtained and the frequency of bites has kept up a sporting interest for schoolboys, who are not inclined as a rule to sit for too long waiting for something to turn up.

Y.M.C.A. Camp. Favoured with ideal weather since it opened on December 27, the Wanganui Y.M.C.A. boys’ camp at Kai Iwi has attracted entrants from a wide area. Swimming and hiking have featured largely in the daily programme and sports fixtures have been held. The camp is in charge of Mr. R. March, and will continue for another week. Swimming Carnival.

The Wanganui East Swimming Club will hold its first carnival at the Wanganui East baths next Wednesday evening. All the local clubs will be represented with good entries in the lengthy programme, and with members of the Wanganui representative team for the Dominion championships competing, the public is assured of an excellent evening’s sport. Orderly Citizens.

When a first offender appeared in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, this week, charged with drunkenness, the police commented that it was the only arrest made during the Christmas and New Year period. This prompted Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., to remark that such a position reflected credit on Wanganui. Accused was convicted and discharged.

Inquest Opened. An inquest on an elderly’ pensioner who had been missing from the Jubilee Home Aramoho, since last Sunday, and whose body was found on the bank of the .Wanganui River on Thursday afternoon, was opened before the coroner, Mr. S. M. Dixon, yesterday. He was John Mackerall, aged 77, and after evidence of identification had been taken the inquest was adjourned sine die. Hairdressers Busy. Ocean waves and permanent waves do not harmonise, judging by the number of women who have made appointments at Wanganui, beauty salons to have repaired the damage done to their hair by sea-bathing. The coiffures arranged for Christmas have suffered from the effects of the salt water and sun, and hairdressers are now busy re-setting waves and shampooing. Swimming Popular. City and suburban swimming baths in Wanganui are enjoying a boom season tor the second consecutive year. The attendance at the St. George’s Gate Baths since November has averaged about 1100 persons a week. To date approximately 150 season tickets have been sold at the baths. In the past month about 38 people have been taught to swim. It was stated yesterday that the number of visitors from outside centres has been less this seaeson than for some time past. Popular Lakes. In spite of the fact that touring round the Rotorua district by motorcar has been somewhat restricted because of the petrol position, the lakes are again a popular attraction during the present holiday season. Many people have enjoyed swimming in the various lakes, favoured spots being at Tarawera, the Blue Lake, Rotoiti and Okataina. The temperatures havebeen mild, adding to the attractiveness of the water for swimmers. Beside/5 the lake scenery, the scenic bush is, of course, always a feature of the various sight-seeing trips. Tanks Running Dry. Some farmers and suburban dwellers in Wanganui dependent on tanks have had to resort to carrying water from small streams and other sources of emergency supply. Other tanks are low and will be dry in the near future unless the position is relieved by rain. In the area served by City Council mains no shortage has occurred as yet, but the authorities emphasise that water should be conserved. Tiil further notice the Marton Borough Council has prohibited the use of hoses for watering gardens as also has the Hawera Borough Council. In Palmerston North concern has been expressed because of the low level of. the reservoirs.'
