INFANTILE PARALYSIS
WARNING BY DEPARTMENT Followng minor outbreaks of infantile paralysis in the South Island the Department of Health has issued a warning that this increased incidence of the disease might, bp the precursor of a summer or autumn epidemic. The department, urges parents to dp on thp constant look-out for symptoms and emphasises the imperative need for prompt action. It is also stated that children should not be permitted to go hatless on sunny days. The symptoms of infantile paralysis| are similar to those of other infectious childhood diseases and sick chil-1 dren affected by fever, headache, drowsiness and irritability should be I treated as suspects and a doctor summoned. Stiffness of the spine and neck is aj highly-significant symptom. Early | indications of infection may he mild., but within 24 to 72 hours the chldi may not be able to move a limb. !
