THE COMING INVASION WHERE AND WHEN? (Special Correspondent— N.Z.P.A.) Recd. 7 p.m. London, Jan. 3. 1944 is greeted universally here as “Victory Year.” An increasingly popular pastime is in trying to guess when invasion of Europe from Britain will be launched. “The curtain is about to go up,” comments the Economist. “By January 1, 1945, either the European war will be over or else the prevailing view about the time and manner of its ending will have to be radically revised. For Victory it is now or never.” The start of the invasion will, of course, depend greatly on the weather. January and February are usually regarded as among the worst months in Britain. Another speculation is where the invasion will be launched. Here, perhaps, the governing factor may be fighter cover range, the importance of which has been proved time and again, particularly at Salerno.
