HIGH LEVELS REACHED Land transfers, which had been on a heavy scale in recent months, reached even greater proportions in October, states the Abstract of Statistics. Under the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act, 1943, all transactions in regard to the sale of land must be sanctioned by the Land Sales Court established under the Act. This represented an increase of 7837 in number and £13,286,019 in value, compared with the corresponding period of 1942. Compared with a similar period of 1939, the increase amounted to 4568 and £12,014,674 for number and value respectively. The value represented by building permits issued in the larger centres in October was £810,047, of which £431,372 was in respect of permits for alterations and additions, and £378,675 for new buildings. Comparative figures for September were: Alterations and additions, £180,014; new buildings, £316,707; all permits, £496,811.

The number of dwelling permits included in the figures for October was 302, compared with 240 in September and 73 in (October, 1942. Of the 302 dwelling permits for October, 1943, 206 were in respect of units commenced by the Department of Housing Construction, which during the month also commenced operations on 17 new dwellings in other districts.
