DUKE OF WINDSOR
DENIAL OF RETIREMENT RUMOUR Recd. 8 p.m. New York, Nov. 20. A spokesman for the Duke of Windsor denied a report that His Highness is retiring shortly from Governorship of the Bahamas. He added that the Duke was entirely at the disposal of the British Government for the duration of the war and was willing to serve in any wartime role at the request of the King or his old friend Mr. Churchill. However, the Duke in the final analysis, regarded himself as a free agent an<) master of his fate. He does not expect to spend the rest of his life in the Bahamas He does not think tne climate suitable for ail-the-year-round residence, but is not planning to buy a farm in the United States. “The Duchess of Windsor is reported to be urging the Duke to buy a farm in (he Eastern United States and .settle down as a country squire.” says the North American newspaper Alliance. "The Duke was said to be retiring shortly from the Governorship of the Bahamas. It is known that he recently declined the post of Governor of Bermuda. Friends say the Duke is unhappy in the Bahamas and feels that he has now accomplished all he can for the colony.” The Duke and Duchess are returning to the Bahamas from New York after eight weeks’ absence.
