MARCHING CHAMPIONSHIPS AT HAWERA WANGANUI TEAMS’ SUCCESS Of the 16 girls’ marching teams which took part in the South Taranaki championship, held in conjunction with the Egmont Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show at Hawera on Saturday night, 12 were from Wanganui. In all, 120 girls travelled to Hawera by special train on Saturday afternoon, accompanied by the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band. Three Wanganui teams, McKenzie’s, Technical Old Girls and Troubadours, were placed first, second and third respectively. Last year the championship was won by United (Wanganui), placed sixth on Saturday. Results were:— MCKENZIES, led by Miss P. Reid and coached by Mr. F. Newbold, 100 £ points : 1 TECHNICAL OLD GIRLS, led by Miss S. Mitehell and coached by Sergeant R. Nees, 992 joints 2 TROUBADOURS, led by Miss W. Fowler and coached by Mr. A. Rudkin—Warrant Officer C. Young, 91, 8; Nolantown Hawera), Miss B. Thurston—Mr. J. Kilgariff, 872, 9; St. George (Wanganui). Miss M. Whale—Mr. D. Almond, 852. 10; D.I.C. (Wanganui), Miss J. Buller— Sergeant Green, 85*, 11; Oxfords (Wanganui), Miss D. Longstaff, 842, 12; Hospital Nurses (Wanganui), Miss Tukaki—Mr. L. Wright, 83, 13; Hawera Technical Old Girls, Miss G. Franks—Mr. J. E. Davis, 81i, 14; Kiwis (Wanganui), Miss N. Collard — Mr. L. Moyle, 80i, 15; Midgets (Hawera), Miss M. Young—Miss L. Clapham, 65i, 16.
The prize for the best leader went, to Miss D. Andrews (Roebucks, New Plymouth), with Miss Tukaki (Hospital Nurses. Wanganui) second. A competition for the best costumes resulted:' United (Wanganui) 1, Victory (Wanganui) 2, St. George (Wanganui) 3.
After arriving at Hawera, the Wanganui teams gave a special display of of marching before a large attendance at the showgrounds. The costumes were subsequently judged and the championships were held in the evening. Before leaving for home by train, the Wanganui girls were entertained at a dance.
