GROUPING OF CHILDREN

VALUE OF INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL Parents and friends of the Intermediate School had an opportunity of inspecting a display of pupils' work when a gathering was neiu recently as part or the 10th. anniversary celebrations. They were welcomed Dy the chairman of the intermediate School Committee, Mr. A. F. Ralph, wno reviewed the past 10 years and expressed confidence that, alter some opposition at the start the future ol the school -a as now established. Mr. Ralph added that his committee greatly appreciated the Wanganui ■tsducaiion rsoard’s promise of a new school building. The principal, Mr. W. E. Fossette, explained the aavantages of the intermediate system. The important aim was character training ana citizenship, another point worthy ot emphasis being a good grounding in primary senool subjects. Nearly 400 pupils attended the Intermediate School, Mr, Fossette added, and practically all ot them were at the same stage ol educational development. This enabled the children to be grouped in such a way that all could give of their best without any feeling of either superiority or inferiority. This was desirable because no narrow group of school subjects could provide a basis for estimating the future worth of a child to he community. The senior inspector of schools Mr B. N. T. Blake, also stressed the value ot the Intermediate School and emphasised that it could function properly only when there was close co-operation with the home.
