HAWERA TRACK WORK

Perfect track and overhead conditions prevailed yesterday morning for the final work, before leaving, of the Hawera horses to race at the Levin and C.J.C. fixtures. The important work was* done on the plough, which was in fast order.

A pleasing feature of the morning’s work was the improved form of BQ’ttledress and Clarice, who are to represent the centre in the handicap and sprint races nt the New Zealand Cup meeting on Saturday week. Corday (Potroz) and Surveyor General (Neill) set the main by galloping half a mile in 50sec., Corday finishing half a length in front of his stable-mate.

Battledress (Holland) and War Effort (Clutterbuck), setting off from the mile peg, cracked the pace on at the six furlongs disc to run to the three furlongs in 39sec., completing the six in 1.17, the last two furlongs in 25*sec. Battledress was half a length in front and it nicely. This was Battledress’ best showing this term, and much interest will attach to his performance at Otaki on Saturday in view of his New Zealand Cup engagement. N. Holland, who invariably rides him in his work, will ride "him at Otaki and is also to have the mount on Hawera’s hope in the Ne wZealand Cup. Clarice (Clutterbuck) showed an improvement in track form to gallop five furlongs in 1.2 impressively, the last three being covered in 37sec. Clarice will be well fancied for her engagement at Otaki on Saturday when L. Clutterbuck will be her pilot. . Meermlnt :Clutterbuck) galloped half a mile in 51sec., being brought, home the last three furlongs by Gay Theio (Moore).

Fort Royal (Clutterbuck) was apportioned an easy round, coming his last two furlongs in 26£sec. Going from a barrier start Etta Quex (Clutterbuck) and Vermette (Moore) covered half a mile in 53isec.

Golden Acre (Holland) was given two rounds at a solid pace, finishing his last half-mile in 54Bsec.
