JAPANESE TARGETS
HEAVILY RAIDED BY U.S. LIBERATORS Reed. 11 p.m. Pearl Harb,. Nov. 18. Army Liberator bombers on Monday afternoon raided Japanese targets on the Jaluit and Mille atolls in the Marshall Islands and Makin Island in the Gilberts. Admiral Nimitz's communique says one enemy ship was set on fire and three possibly hit in Jaluit Harbour. Many fires were started in hangars, shops and fuel dumps on Imieji and Jabor Islands, off Jaluit. Several fires were started at Mille. Clouds prevented accurate observation, rhe Makin raiders, which returned undamaged, did not meet aerial opposition but ack-ack fire was intense at Mille. The Japanese have a strong seaplane base and a good harbour at Jaluit, where pilots saw seaplanes and many barges in addition to the transports attacked. The United Press correspondent says the attacks apparently surprised the Japanese and demonstrate tne ability of the Seventh Army Air Force’s land-based bombers to strike the enemy at will in the Marshalls and the Gilberts. , . , . The Monday raids on these islands followed attacks on Saturday night and Sunday.
