LEROS FALLS
DEFENCE OVERWHELMED ORGANISED RESISTANCE ENDED
(By Telegraph—Press Z.wociatlon—Copyright) London, Nov. 17. It is reported that organised resistance by the Allied garrison on the island of Leros, in the Dodecanese group, has ended, the defenders being overwhelmed by the incessant German bombing.
Recd. 8 p.m. London, Nov. IG. German dive-bombing of Allied forces on Leros Island was increasing in tempo, according to latest frontline reports received in Cairo. Stuka.s were swooping constantly in day-long sorties. This enemy superiority was one of the battle’s biggest factors, restricting the flexibility of the defence and the movements of the defending troops. Meantime the battle on the ground was still in full swing, with fluctuating fortunes.
