General Montgomery's left wing has advanced another two miles and seized heights covering the Castel di Sangro-Aliedena road junction. These two important enemy defence towns are only four miles ahead of the Eighth Army spearheads. Fires have been observed, suggesting that demolitions are being made before their evacuation. The towns control two roads running north, one through Caste! di Sangro being the main road through central Italy, which eventually joins the Rome-Pescara road. Nearer the Adriatic coast the men of the Eighth Army who captured Atessa are again advancing. British 2q-pounders have been shelling the Germans from the south bank of the Garigliano River. A number of brisk artillery duels occurred. Enemy planes so far captured or destroyed on the ground in liberated Italy total 1462.
