AMBULANCE TESTS

HAWERA COMPETITIONS WANGANUI SUCCESSES. Ten teams of St. John Ambulance cadets took part in the annual competition for the Whittingham and Coates shields held at Hawera on Saturday. Wanganui cadets entered four boys' teams and two girls' teams, the Whittingham shield being won by the previous holders, East Town, Wanganui, and the Coates shield by Wanganui B girls’ team. District officer G. Scott, Wanganui, judged the Whittingham shield contest, and Mesdames M. Stevenson and S. E. Bellve judged the Coates shield competition. Accompanying the visiting teams were Corps officer J. Welton, Cadet supt. A. Relph, Cadet officers P. McCartney, and C. Coutts, and Cadet supt. Mrs. Mclntosh, Hawera officers present were Corps officer C. L. Sharpe, Cadet Supts. C. E. Coates and Mrs. Sharpe, and Cadet officer Mrs. Coates.

The girls’ competition consisted of treatment of a. wound in the palm of the hand and a fracture of the kneecap, and the boys were examined in the treatment of a fractured forearm and a bleeding temple artery. Results were :

Whittingham shield: East Town, 1; Wanganui A, 80 pts., 2; Hawera B pts., 2; Marist, Wanganui, 92 pts., 3; Wanganui Central 884 pts., 3; Hawera B, 86 pts., 5; Mosstown, Wanganui, 76 pts., 6. Coates shield: Wanganui B 98 pts., 1; Wanganui A, 80pts., 2; Hawera B 77 pts., 3; Hawera A, 76 pts., 4.

The visitors were entertained at a social evening on Saturday. Dancing was held, interspersed with musical and vocal items. Mr. E. H. Linnell gave a cup to the Hawera girls' division to be awarded for efficiency during. the year. Mrs. Sharpe accepted the cup on behalf of the division.

The shield’s won in the afternoon's competitiols were presented by District Officer Scott. Cadet Superintendent Coates was master of ceremonies. A church parade was held on Sunday morning. when the cadets marched to the Methodist and Catholic Churches, being led by the Hawera Municipal Band. A cornet solo, “The Lost Chord,” was played by Bandsman J. Haines.
