WANGANUI COMPOSER’S SUCCESS

CHRISTCHURCH BROADCAST The compositions of Douglas Lilburn comprised the programme of the broadcast concert by the 3YA orchestra and the pianist Noel Newsome last Wednesday evening. The composer conducted the orchestra and at the conclusion of the concert he was accorded an ovation. Douglas Lilburn was a pupil of St. George’s Preparatory School. Later he studied under Vaughan Williams at the Royal College London, where he won the composition prize. He also met with great success during the New Zealand Centenary celebrations. Last week’s broadcast established Douglas Lilburn as an outstanding figure in New Zealand to-day. His work showed an acceptance and deep understanding of the modern idiom of music-making. The fine gabatelles for piano were pronounced by competent critics to be a sheer delight and showed no irritating resemblance to any particular school of contemporary composers. The future career of this young Wanganui composer will be watched with interest.
