DOCTOR BEFORE COURT

21 CHARGES PREFERRED (P.A.) Auckland, Oct. 1. A medical practitioner, George Brownley Isdale, aged 51, of Ngaruawahia, was charged before Mr. Paterson, S.M., in Hamilton, on two counts of conspiring with women to unlawfully use an instrument or other means with intent to procure miscarriages and on 19 counts of Unlawfully using an instrument with intent to procure miscarriages. Mr. V. R. Meredith conducted the case for the Crown, and Mr. J. F. Strang appeared for accused. There were 34 witnesses and the case was not completed in the day. The witnesses ranged from young single girls to middle-aged married women and the fees they said they paid accused ranged from £l2 to £35. The witnesses came from Auckland and from various Waikato towns. Mr. Meredith asked that accused be committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for trial. Mr. Strang objected. The magistrate said he could send the accused to any Supreme Court in New Zealand. He added that he would decide the point when he had heard all the evidence.
