Miss N. Anthony, Hastings, is visiting Wanganui as the guest of Miss Bates.

Mrs. S. Humphries, who has been visiting Wanganui as the guest of Mrs. Callaghan. Wanganui East, has returned to her home in New Plymouth.

Widely known as a botanist at. the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Miss Lucy M. Cranwell, Parnell, was married in Auckland on Thursday to Major S. W. Smith, United States Army, only son ,of the late Judge and Mrs. Samuel Smith, Ohio. The bride became botanist at the Auckland War Memorial Museum when it was first opened. She studied in Stockholm in 1935-36, joined an expedition to the Hawaiian Mountains in 1938, and was in the same year elected a Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London. The bridegroom, Major Smith, is an archaeologist.

Kai Iwi Women’s Institute.

A very happy afternoon was spent at the eighth birthday of the Kai Iwi Womne’s Institute. Mrs. McKenize presided and welcomed all members and visitors from the Wanganui Federation, Brunswick and Westmere. Business was dealt with. A letter of greeting was read from Mrs. Hocken, a member who has left the district. Miss Joiner gave the motto for the month). Mrs. Brownlie (Brunswick) gave a talk on her trip to Gis*borne to attend conference. Mrs. Flynn (Westmere) contributed two enjoyable items. Mrs. Lynch, president of the federation (Wanganui) gave a talk on institute matters, also the education value of the Golden Thread series. A competition arranged by Mrs. Morrison was won by Mrs. Stockman. The afternoon was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem. Nine Christmas cakes were sent to boys overseas. Competitions were as as follows: —Sugar bag cushion, Miss Joiner 1, Mrs. Bruntlet! 2, Mrs. Shannon 3; rock cakes, Mrs. Rountree 1, Mrs. Gardiner 2. Miss McCullock 3; vase flowers, Mrs. Rountree 1. Miss McCullock 2. Mrs. Gardiner Competitions for October will be three plain scones, man’s buttonhole. Miss McCullock and Mrs. Cannon will be the hostesses.
