D.F.C. FOR NEW ZEALANDER

Recd. 8 p.m. Rugby, Oct. 2. Whig-Commander R. E. Clouston, o. New Zealand, who before the war broke records to the Cape and to New Zealand, was awarded the D.F.C “for great gallantry and coolness in attacking and destroying an enemy submarine.” He was one of those chosen for the hazardous task of flying into balloon barrage cables to test their effectiveness. This involved the risk of decapitation. Clouston wore a crash helmet and covered his cockpit with steel mesh.—B.O.W.
