LOST OPPORTUNITY

KNOCK GERMANS OUT BY BOMBING Recd. 9 p:m. New York, Sept. 24. The New York Times’ correspondent in London, Drew Middleton, says the Allies are losing an opportunity of knocking Germany out of the war by bombing. “Although the weather conditions have been favourable,” he says, “the Allies made only seven big night raids O7i the German industrial centres in September, compared with eleven in August. The reduced number of big night raid’s is believed to be the lesult of diverting bombers to tactical targets of momentary importance and the transfer of bombers and crews to other theatres o2 war.” Recd. 9 o.m. Washington, Sept. 29. “The High Command has failed to recognise the United States' capacity to create destructive air-power which might have brought Germany to the dust of defeat months ago,” declared Senator Downey, giving evidence before the Senate in support of Senator Wheeler’s Bill delaying the induction of fathers to the Army. He demanded that the Army concentrate on airpower instead of drafting fathers to build up a vast land army, most of which never can anti never will be used. Senator Downey quoted undeniable authority that Germany is weakening so fast and our air-power is growing so rapidly that the efficient use of bombers would reduce the Nazis to quick surrender or terrible destruction. Senator Downey concluded: “A larger army is a wasteful burden and tragic futility.”
