N.Z. ELECTIONS
LONDON TIMES COMMENT (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) London, Sept. 28. The Times, in a leader on the New Zealand General Elections, declares that striking features have been the large Labour majority in the service votes, which saved Government saats in several constituencies. “This may be an expression of gratitude for the care shown for the welfare of the servicemen and their families, both during and after the war, but it reflects the general conviction that the Government has conducted the’ New Zealand share of the war with vigour, determination and efficiency, and that in the present critical situation it would-be safer tp let them keep on with their work. With the parties more evenly divided Parliament will gain m critical efficiency and as a brake on any tendency to use the war situation for partisian political objects.”
Reference is also made to the farmers’ vote. The Times adds: “They now seem to be reverting to their old political leanings. The immediate cause may be resentment against the Act for the regulation of the sale of land.”
