MODERN FIGHTING

TRAINING CHINESE Chungking Preparing for the day when ho will load his Chinese Army in the coun-ter-invasion of Burma. LieutenantGeneral Joseph W. Stilwell has established two United States training centres in China for the instruction of Chinese officers in the latest American fighting techniques and the use of American weapons. The two schools, situated at widely separated points in western China under the protective shadow of the Himalaya foothills, opened on April 1, but their existence can only now be disclosed. One specialises in training in infantry tactics and weapons and the other in artillery. Once they have completed their course ol instruction, directed by American specialists, the Chinese officers return to their respective units and pass on what they have learned to Chinese enlisted men. Thus a nucleus of well trained troops is being formed inuide the Chinese Army which will play an important part in the Allied drive to oust the Japanese from Burma and other conquered territories on the Asiatic mainland. The artillery school is commanded by Colonel Frank Dorn, of San Francisco, who walked out of Burma with Stilwell and is “Uncle Joe’s” deputy-chief of staff. Briga-dier-General Thomas Arms, of Cleveland. directs the infantry school which, under a peculiar organisation, has Generalissimo Chiang Kaishek as its official commandant.
