OBITUARY

AIR. JOHN DOWN. The death occurred in Wellington on Saturday, of Mr. John Down, formerly superintendent of Mt. Crawford prison. Mr. Down was born in Auckland in 1872 and joined the prison service in 1897 as bricklayer at the old Terrace prison. After 18 months there he was transferred to New Plymouth. While there he was asked by the municipal authorities to lay out Western Park and the East End Esplanade. After 11 years in New Plymouth he was transferred back to Wellington, and then to various prison camps. In 1913 he was appointed officer-in-charge at Waikerira camo, near Te Awamutu, where he instituted a model dairy and other extensive farming operations. In 1920 he was appointed superintendent at New Plymouth, and in 1924 at Waitako, Trentham. Mr. Down returned to Wellington in 1926 and was for a number of years superintendent at Mt. Crawford prison till he retired in 1937. He is survived by his wife and daughter, Miss Marianne Down. NIR. HENRY BARNES. Mr. Henry Barnes, who till his retirement a few years ago was manager of Terawhiti Station, Makara County, died recently. He was a son of the late Mr. Thomas Barnes, one of the earlier pioneers of New Zealand, and was born at Opau, Makara, in 1867. He and his nephew were prominent in the- work of assisting, the survivors of the steamer Penguin, wrecked near Terawhiti in February, 1909. Mr. Baynes is survived by his wife, one daughter and two sons.
