CORPORAL R. FREEMAN AT RATA Addressing a large attendance of electors at Rata on Tuesday night, Corporal R. Freeman, Labour candidate for Rangitikei, said the Government would continue to control the Dommion’s banking credit and currency" system for the expansion of production and the prevention of inflation and deflation. Labour held that the State must be the sole authority for controlling the issue of credit and currency. Although faced with unprecedented war expenditure the Government was determined to keep the overseas debt at the lowest possible figure. On March 31, last, apart from the war debt, the overseas debt,, compared with December. 1935, had been reduced by £11,412,000. The Government’s policy had consistently been to make the road of the post-war period less difficult by reducing the overseas debt and keeping the internal debt as low as possible, while using taxation to pay the maximum towards the costs of the war. th? speaker added.
