LABOUR CANDIDATE FOR WELLINGTON WEST (P.A.) Wellington, Sept. 15. A vote of no-confidence, both in the Labour candidate for Wellington West and in the Labour Party, was carried at the conclusion of a lively meeting addressed by Mrs. C. S. Stewart at Makara on Monday night. To a proposal that a vote of thanks be accorded the candidate there was an amendment expressing no confidence in the candidate or the Labour Party, the mover of the amendment remarking: “They are prepared to sell the country; they are felling it to the Socialists.” The motion of no confidence was taken, and, on a show of hands, it was carried by an overwhelming majority of the attendance of about 40. ‘ When touching on education during her address, Mrs. Stewart spoke of bursaries granted to enable students to be sent to Otago University. A voice: Including a conscientious objector. To this the candidate replied that the interjector was lacking in courtesy. whereas, in spite of his interrupting. she had been very patient. However, since the remark had been made, she desired to make an explanation. It was an unfortunate remark. seeing that she had two sons in a defaulters’ camp. The fact had been published in the local papers following her explanation at a previous meeting. “And.” the candidate added, “you can rest assured that it has gone all over the country that Mrs. Stewart’s two sons are in a defaulters’ camp.” “Does the candidate know that the Governm n nt has 1.400 acres of land out here?” asked another questioner in pressing a claim for better access to Makara. “Docs it not seem remarkable,” said the candidate, “that I have been five years in office and you people have not. thought it worth while to tell me of these things?” “You have never thought it worth while to come out here to us in five years,” came th n reply.
