SPRING BLOOMS

WANGANUI SUBURBAN SOCIETY SPLENDID EXHIBITION With many entries and exhibits of high quality, the annual spring show' of the Wanganui and Suburban Horticultural Society, opened yesterday in the premises formerly occupied by Dominion Motors, Maria Place, is considered by competent judges to be the most successful effort in a long period. The judges expressed the opinion that the display, despite the recent unfavourable weather, has produced a uniform high standard, the flowers being of fine type and colour. The president of the society, Mr. G. A. Ammundsen, said that great credit was due to the exhibitors and members for the strong support given the show. He paid tribute to all who had contributed to its success. In declaring thd show open the Mayor, the Hon. W. J. Rogers, congratulated the society on a very outstanding exhibition. The society was achieving good work in fostering the showing of blooms, and in all parts of the city and suburbs its influence was felt. The champion bloom ■ of the show, “White House,” was exhibited by Mrs. Moorby. The same bloom was also declared the champion of the leedsii section. Mrs. Moorby also had three other best blooms in the show. They were “Daytona” (barrii class), “Arclinis” (trumpet), and Seedling (incomparabilis). Good organisation enabled the judging to be completed with a minimum of delay. A good attendance of the pubic was recorded yesterday. The show will be continued to-day and will conclude to-night. The following is the list of awards: Special Prizes. Points prize (open class), Mrs. Moorby. She also won the “Chronicle” iCup, for seedling classes, went to Mr. Tyler won the society’s trophy for the points prize in the amateur section. The C. H. E. Rhodes Memorial Cup, for seerling classes, went to Mr. A. Johnson. Mr. FL R. Bellringer won the society’s cup in the intermediate section, and Mr. D. A. Howard was runner-up. Mr. Bellringer also won the points prize in the intermediate section. Mr. Ron Ammundsen was successful in winning the points prize in the novice section, and in the cut flowers the points prize went to Miss A. Cave. Mrs. A. McLeod won the points prize in the amateur decorative section, and Miss N. Cox was the winner of the points prize in the novice section. Mrs. C. Gardiner annexed the special prize for the bowl of white flowers. The best bloom in the children’s section was awarded to B. Le Compte. Other Awards.
