POMPEYS PILLAR
. REVEALING DISCOVERY Recd. 6 p.m. Cairo, Sept. 1. T.ie director of the Greco-Roman Museum. Mr. Alan Rowe, has discovered under the foundations of Pompey's Pillar gold, silver. an u other plaques of the reign of Ptolemy 111. which throw new light on the history of the famous temple dedicated to Serapfa and also the great library. The excavations, which are being continued, may reveal hitherto unknown documents relating to one of Egypt’s most brilliant periods. Ptolemy 111 was King of Egypt from 247 to 222 B.C. Pompey's Pillar is a Corinthian column of beautifully polished red granite at Alexandria. It was erected in 302 A.D. in honour of Diocletian, whose statue stood on the summit.
