WANGANUI SALE FAT STOCK IN DEMAND Al. rates in advance of last week there was a keen demand for ex-dairy cows and heifers at Freeman R. Jackson and Co.’s Wanganui sale yesterday. Nothing approaching prime quality was yarded, and store cattle were confined to boner cows. In the dairy section there was only a light entry of poor condition springing heifers with sales hard to effect, consequently low prices prevailed. There was an average entry of fat sheep at rates firm on last week, while a light, entry of store sheep met with little enquiry. VALUES AT ADDINGTON (P.A.) Christchurch. Sept. 1. Entries of fat sheep and cattle were of normal size at Addington to-day and another good sale was recorded in both sections, cattle showing a further rise. There was only a small yarding of store sheep, and with the improvement in the weather there was a strong demand for all classes. There was a very small yarding of store sheep, only 1370 being penned, against 2200 last week. There was a keen demand for all classes, and the indications point to prices in this section rising to a high level later. Quality was not well represented, most of the sheep, especially hoggets, showing the effects of winter conditions. The best price for aged ewes was 26s 9d for 63 local sheep in lamb to Southdown rams, two other lots making 25s 6d and 25s 4d. A lino of 66 small 2-tooth half bred ewes realised 28s. Medium lots brought from 20s 6d to 23s lid, inferior from 8s 6d to 13s 3d. The hoggets on offer were of poor quality, the best price being 22s 4d for 119 wethers. Other lines of both ewes and wethers brought from. 15s 7d to 19s, and inferior 10s 9d to 14s. Of the wethers yarded 70 sold for 27s 3d and the balance for 21s. Best ewes and ]amb§ made 19s 6d, all counted, others ranging from 16s Id to 16s 3d. The yarding of fat sheep -was about the same as last week, approximately 3700. The quality was good throughout, especially in the case of sheep from Southern districts. Competition was keen from the outset, and although wethers once more held their own, good young ewes showed a slight appreciation on recent figures. The best price for ewes was 43s Id for a pen from a line of Southern ewes which ranged from 39s lOd to that figure. The highest price for wethers was 53s Id. The first shorn wethers of the season attracted attention and a truck of 73 sold at 30s lOd to 33s Id. The entry of fat cattle was smaller than usual, comprising 426 head, against 534 last week. The dearest market of the year was recorded, the advance on last week’s prices being up to 35s a head for specially choice beef. Quite a proportion of this made up to 60s per 1001 b. Good beef made from 53s to 575, heavy prime up to 52s 6d, medium 455, ordinary to 425. Best heifer made up to 545, good to 495, ordinary to medium 39s to 445. Best cow beef made to 455. medium to 37s 6d, ordinary 355.
