LATE MR. W. J. PIPER

LIFETIME SPENT IN WANGANUI ASSOCIATION WITH SPORT. Born in Wanganui in the historic Rutland Stockade 65 years ago, Mr. William Joseph Piper recently died. On leaving school he joined the New Zealand Railway Department and spent the whole of his 40 years’ service with it in Wanganui. As a young man he took a keen interest in all forms of sport, being an active member of the Aramoho Boating Club, the Pirate Football Club and the East Town Workshops hockey team. For many years Mr. Piper was a valued and active member of the Wanganui Caledonian Society and was a successful competitor at many Highland dancing championships on the West Coast of the North Island. Among his trophies were numerous medals testifying to his skill as an outstanding contestant. A member oi the Wanganui Volunteer Fire Brigade lor 21 years, he rose to the positic'n cl foreman and held the service medal and eight bars. In recognition of his community service, Mr. Piper was among the residents of Wanganui, who were honoured with a King George V Jubilee medal in 1935. He is survived by his wife, one son, Staff-Sergeant H. Piper, and onedaughter, Mrs. W. Wilson, both oi Wanganui.
