TAIHAPE. Mrs. H. J. Bo water, Ruru Road, Taihape, was recently sworn in as a Justice of the Peace. HOME” GUARD DINNER RUAPEHU BATTALION. (0.C.) Taihape, Aug. 31. About 300 were present at the annual dinner of the Ruapehu Battalion of the Home Guard held recently in the Taiha.pe Town Hall. Major Chrystall presided. Among those present were Lieut-Colonel Groves, Major Mellowes and Captain Scott-Smith. Major Chrystall expressed appreciation of help given and thanked the country members for providing such an excellent dinner. Following the dinner items were given by the Waiouru staff camp band and members of the Home Guard. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The Utiku branch of the Women’s Institute recently celebrated their tenth birthday. The president, Mrs. G. M. Transom welcomed a large number of friends and visitors. A short musical programme was presented by members after which afternoon tea. was served. Pride of place: was given to the beautiful birthday cake made and iced by Mrs. Transom and Mrs. Prime. Mrs. Potaka senior, who has done much knitting for the Utiku boys overseas, lit the 10 candles. Mrs. Dellow, Federation president, cut the cake and congratulated the Utiku members and wished them continued success.

A remit is to be sent by the Auckland Metropolitan Patriotic Committee to the National Patriotic Fund Board, urging that publicity be given in New Zealand to the dates of arrival at their destinations of letters sent to servicemen in England and the Middle East. It was stated at a meeting of the committee that this information would be welcomed by relatives of the men.
