SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. Haldane. College Street, is visiting Hawke's Bay. Mrs. Bernard Cullinane, Whatatutu, Gisborne, is the guest of Mrs. Des. Campion, Fordell. Mrs. W. Fly ger, Fordell, accompanied by her small son John, is visiting Wellington. Mrs. H. F. Kyle, of Auckland, anMrs. P. McLean and her daughter, ol Hawke’s Bay, were the guests of Mrs. T. C. Laidlaw, Boydfield Street, for the week-end. Mrs. Norman Allan and her daughter Audrey, of Wanganui, have been visiting Rotorua, and from there they journey to Auckland to-day to continue their holiday. Advice has been received by Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Cade, Grey Street, that, their daughter, Mrs. Ralph Scovel. has arrived in the United States and is to take up residence in San Francisco. ENGAGEMENT. Robinson—Anderson.— Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Anderson announce the engagement o( their eldest daughter. Joan St. Clair, !o Thomas Oscar, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Robinson, of Timaru. HITHER AND THITHER Ihventy-first Birthday Parly. To celebrate the coming of age of their daughter, Helen Margaret, a twenty-first birthday party was given by Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Laidlaw at their residence in Boydfield Street. Wanganui East, on Saturday night. The twenty-eight friends who assembled made Miss Laidlaw the recipient of many delightful gifts. The evening was happily spent in games and music. A buffet supper was served and Mr. Laidlaw presented his daughter with a large golden key. Mr. W. Chainey proposed the toast of the guest of honour, and in reply Miss Laidlaw proposed the toast to the absent boys and to her brother in the R.N.Z.A.F. Spring blossoms made artistic decorations in the drawing-room.

WANGANUI CENTRE, RED ( ROSS SOCIETY

The general detachtment meeting of the Wanganui Centre was held at the Wanganui Sub-Centre rooms on Friday evening. August 27. Mrs. H. R. Lattey, centre advisory director, was in the chair. Miss L. Crooke. director-general, Wellington, and Miss B. H. Williams, Wanganui Centre commandant, were present, also V. A. delegates from Durie Hill, Gonville, Marton, Taihape and Wanganui SubCentres and transport delegates from Marton and Wanganui. Miss Crooke was welcomed by Mrs. Lattey, who stated that this was not an official visit. Miss Crooke in reply said she was very pleased to have the opportunity of meeting delegates from the Wanganui Centre in a friendly way.

Miss J. Anderson, who has entered the Wellington Public Hospital to take her nursing training, resigned her position as secretary. A vote of thanks for her work to the centre was passed. Miss D. Tilley was elected in her place. Reports were read from all sections represented and also from Taihape Transport Section. The Transport Sections all report meeting the men who returned on furlough and also sick and wounded. At the recent examination in home nursing held in Wanganui, two V.A.D.’s from Wanganui Sub-Centre and one from Gonville gained a bar to their medallions. All V.A.D. sections reported a busy time with activities and practices.

After the business was completed Miss Crooke gave a very interesting talk on her work as director-general. This was greatlv enjoved by all present and a vote of thanks was accorded to Miss Crooke. Supper was I served by the Marton Sub-Centre.
