WHALING INDUSTRY IN AUSTRALIA
(Spec: al Australian Correspondent—N.Z.P.A.) Recd. 6 p.m. Sydney, Aug, 30. The Australian whaling industry is being revived by the Commonwealth Government. Plans to treat whales caught in Australian waters are well advanced. The New Zealand expert, Mr. J. A. Perano, who has been appointed to supervise the project, has arrived in Australia. He proposes to employ a small fleet of fast motorboats to catch the whales and estimates that catches of 500 a season should be possible. The Commonwealth Government is erecting a factory, and in addition to whale oil, which has many war uses, there will be a host of by-products. Parts of the whales’ carcases will bo stored for medical use.
