U-BOAT ARMAMENT

HEAVILY REINFORCED Washington, Aug. 29. The German submarines’ anti-air-craft armament has been recently heavily reinforced to meet the greatly expanded Allied air patrols over the Atlantic. The standard U-boat armament of two all-purnose deck guns and one or two 50-calibre machine-guns mounted in the conning tower has been supplemented by at least two 20 mm. anti-aircra F t cannon. This enables U-boats to throw up fairly heavy fire, to which blimps and patrol flying-boats are particularly vulnerable. Experts are of opinion that it is necessary for the Allies to develop new tactics or armament. They suggest that if flying-boats were equipped with larger cannon than the present 37 mm. they could destroy U-boats from a comparatively safe distance.
