SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. F. K. Turnbull, Bell Street, who has been visiting Auckland, has returned to her home in Wanganui. Miss Mary Barton, of the teaching staff of St. Cuthbert’s College, Auckland, is spending the holidays in Wanganui. Mrs. Ralph Barton, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs. J. R. Cade, Nelson Street Mrs. I. Kitt, Wellington, is visiting Wanganui as the guest of her grandmother, Mrs. J. Neumann, “Netherleigh,” No. 3 Line. Miss Janet Bogle, Wellington, who has been staying in Wanganui as the guest of Mrs. H. Goodman, Virginia Road, has returned south. Mrs. Percy Evans, Nelson Street, with her 'two daughters, Misses Jean and Margaret Evans, left yesterday for a holiday in Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. H. Rochfort, of Christchurch, are on a holiday visit to Wanganui and are staying with friends at Castlecliff. Mr. Rochfort was formerly headmaster of the Wanganui Intermediate School before leaving to take up a similar position at Christchurch South School. A scholarship for post-graduate work at Oregon State College has been granted by the American Home Economics’ Association to Miss Rae Vernon, Bachelor of Home Science, of Roxburgh, Central Otago, at present residing in Auckland. Miss Vernon, who is a graduate of Otago University, intends to devote her studies to dress designing. This is the first time in New Zealand that such a scholarship has been used for the purpose proposed by Miss Vernon. Any others which have been awarded have been used for post-graduate work in dietetics or institutional management.

ENGAGEMENT. King—Raynor. The engagement is announced of Elva, younger daughter of Mrs. Raynor, of Allison Street, Durie Hill, to Tom, only son of Mrs. E. King, Manchester Street, Feilding. HITHER AND THITHER Women’s Franchise. In connection with the jubilee of: women’s franchise, it is interesting to recall that on June 20, 1876, 17 years before the granting of the women's franchise in New Zealand, the Dunedin City Council passed a motion by 7 votes to 4 to permit women property owners to vote at municipal elections. A.F.R. Annual Meeting. Members of Air Force Relations are reminded that signed nominations for president and fourteen committee members must reach the secretary, Mrs. A. D. Brodie by September 6. The annual meeting and election of officers takes place on September 13. Musical Afternoon.

A musical afternoon arranged by ;he Aramoho Women’s Institute, was veil attended, and proved a great success. The following items were much injoyed: A bracket of numbers by ,he League of Mothers’ choir; duets. Vlesdames Berry and Rait; songs, Mrs. Wylie; elocutionary items, Mrs. Penally; dances, Miss Valarie Armstrong. A bright play was staged by members of the Okoia Women’s Institute. The president, Mrs. K. C. Wells, thanked the artists for the pleasant afternoon, and presented each and their accompanists with sprays of flowers. Afternoon tea was served by the institute members. A trading stall and competitions did brisk business, and a generous donation by the Institute Gardening Circle added to the funds of “Miss Victory,” for whom the function was arranged. W.W.S.A. Notes. There will be no W.W.S.A. drill in September. The next drill will be in the Drill Hall on the first Tuesday in October, at 7.30 p.m. Recruits are needed for the Women’s Land Service. The girls who have joined this service are making a very big contribution to the country’s war effort. They are in every way on an equal footing with girls in the other services, W.A.A.C.’s, W.A.A.F.’s, and W.R.N.S. They now have splendid working equipment and a becoming dress uniform and travel warrants like the other services. Enrolment is done at the W.W.S.A. office. Musical Afternoons Realise £Bl. The sum of £Bl has been raised by a series of weekly concerts held during this month by the Gonville Red Cross Sub-Centre to assist the women’s organisations’ candidate, “Miss Victory” (Miss Margaret Merewether) in the Popular Girl contest for raising funds for patriotic purposes. The sub-centre also donated £5O to the Prisoners of War Fund, making a total of £l3l. The final of the series was held yesterday afternoon in St. Peter’s Parish Hall, and was well attended An excellent programme, which was very much appreciated, was as follows: Choruses, League of Mothers’ choir, under the leadership of Mrs. Berry, who also contributed a solo with violin obligato by Mrs. W. Shardlow; songs, Mesdames Palmer and Dudley; vocal duet, Mesdames Yates and Williams; piano solo, Mrs. D. Abernethy; violin solo, Miss June Abernethy; piano-accordion selection, Kelvin Guthrie; elocutionary items, Mrs. H. Gilberd and Miss Dawn Taylor; Irish jig, Nolyn Cann. The accompanists were Mrs. Mew, Mrs. Abernethy and Miss Merle Byers. Mrs. M. McCarthy expressed her thanks to the artists and all who had helped to make the afternoon successful. Rapanui Women’s Institute. The August meeting of the Rapanui W.I. was held in the hall last Thursday, Mrs. Cooper presiding. Before commencing the business of the day, a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs. Hodges. The motto for the day was:

“I don’t think much of a man who isn’t wiser to-day than he was yesterday.” It was reported that six gift parcels had been sent during the month to local boys serving overseas. A letter of thanks from the Wanganui Patriotic Committee was also read, thanking the institute for a donation. Mrs. Cooper (president), gave a very interesting and instructive report on her visit to the conference in Gisborne, which everyone enjoyed. Two social competitions were held, Mrs. Climo and Mrs. Hodge proving the winners. Later, Misses Audrey Cooper and Joan Brown entertained with a patriotic duet. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mrs. E. | Handley and Miss M. Sewell. Com.petition results were as follows: Best bloom. Mrs. Hodges 1, Mrs. McGill 2, Mrs. McNie 3; plate of scones. Mrs. Hodge 1, Mrs. Russell, senr.. 2, Mrs. Handley, senr., 3. Mrs. Coates proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs. Cooper and all contributors to the afternoon’s enjoyment, and proceedings closed with the National Anthem.
