WELLINGTON CITIZENS’ TRIBUTE

(P.A.) Wellington. Aug. 30. Citizens of Wellington paid their tribute to Mrs. Roosevelt when they lilled the Majestic Theatre, applauded the fine .sentiments she expressed in reply to the civic welcome by Mayor, and before she rose to speak sang with hearty warmth of feeling “For She's a Jolly Good Follow.” The Hon. D. G. Sullivan, on behalf of the Prime Minister, welcomed Mrs. Roosevelt on behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand. No one could help but be deeply touched by the kindness and friendly welcome extended by the officials of the Government and the people in Wellington, Mrs. Roosevelt said, in reply. In the feeling of hearty welcome to her as the wife of the President she felt also there was a feeling of confidence in that what was being done by the leaders of Great Britain, the Dominions and the United States would be done with integrity and courage, and with determination to protect those freedoms for which they fought to-day. Farewelled at the Wellington railway station to-night by the GovernorGenerc’l, Mrs. Roosevelt, accompanied by her official party, travelled overnight to Rotorua, where her first engagement to-morrow morning is a civic reception at 11 o’clock. In the afternoon she will visit Whakarewarewa to see the thermal region and proceed from there to a farm where she will see land-girls at work. She will also visit a New Zealand Army convalescent hospital. In the evening she will be accorded a full Maori welcome at Tamatekapua, leaving later for Auckland, where she is due the following morning.
