SWEDISH INDIGNATION
SINKING OfTiSHING BOATS Recd. 6 p.m. London, Aug. 27. The public indignation in Sweden as a result of the sinking of the two Swedish fishing vessels by German warships has reached a peak unsurpassed since the sinking of the submarine Ulsen, says the British Unites Press correspondent in Stockholm. Sweden h awaiting a full German statement after a preliminary answer to the Swedish Foreign Office’s demand for an explanation. If the German reply is unsatisfactory Sweden is likely to lodge one of the most serious protests ever sent to Berlin. The newspaper Social Demokraten states: “The sinkings cannot be defended from any point of view. It is urgent that this opinion should reach those responsible for this meaningless and shocking crime.”
The Dagen Nyheter says: “It is the general opinion that the Government cannot simply smooth over this affair after short discussion.”
The two boats were tired on from 50 yarns’ range. First there was a warning shot, and then broadsides were poured in. It is feared that the crews of both fishing boats perished.
