MR. SUMNER WELLES
RESIGNATION TENDERED Recd. 6 p.m. Rugby, Aug. 27. The United States Assistant Secretary of State. Mr. Sumner Welles, informed Ambassadors that his resignation has been tendered to President Roosevelt. According to a Washington message. Mr. Welles conveyed the news of his resignation, which is not yet officially confirmed, in a personal letter to various members of diplomatic circles with whom he had been long associated. The letters were dated August 22, one day before the announcement from Mr. Welles' office that he would be out of town for a few days. Mr. Welles said in the letters to the Ambassadors that since Mr. Roosevelt had accepted his resignation be no longer had an official appointment with them.—-8.0.W.
