HAILED WITH DELIGHT
AUSTRALIA PREPARES FOR MRS. ROOSEVELT (Special Australian Correspondent—N.Z.P.A.) Recd. 7.15 p.m. Sydney, Aug. 29. The projected visit o£ Mrs. Roosevelt is being hailed with delight throughout Australia, and preparations are being made to give America’s “first lady" the most rousing welcome o£ which this country is capable. Because o£ the short time available for her stay in the Commonwealth Mrs. Roosevelt’s itinerary is expected to be limited to the four cities of the eastern States—Canberra. Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. However, she will be given an opportunity of seeing a vast amount of Australia’s war effort and will meet as many representative Australians as possible. She is likely to be asked to make at least one national broadcast while in Australia. A formal reception to Mrs. Roosevelt will take place at Canberra. Despatches telling o£ Mrs. Roosevelt's activities in New Zealand are featured in all Australian newspaper*, which editorially stress the honour done to the South Pacific democracies by her visit. “Mrs. Roosevelt is a woman of outstanding gifts," says a Sydney Herald leader. “Site has undertaken the long journey across the Pacific primarily to cairy a message of encouragement to the mon of the American fighting services, but in New Zealand and Australia she will naturally see something of what each Dominion is contributing to the common war effort. She has done much to cement British and American relations, and one impression she is certain to gain on her present tour is of affectionate hospitality of New Zealanders and Australians towards her.”
