CLOSING FOR KILL

AMERICANS AT BAIROKO HVRBOUR

Recd. 10.45 -p.m, Sydney. Aug. 27. American ground troops arc closing in for the kill at Bairoko Harbour, the last Japanese stronghold on New Georgia Island in the Central Solomons. Artillery has now been brought up to blast the Japanese out of their coral rat-holes. a Bairoko’s defences include interlocking machine-gun nests, pill-boxes and barbed wire. The strength of these defences was revealed by American Marine forces attacking from the north, states an Australian war correspondent in the area. Charging with bayonets, grenades and dynamite blocks, the Marines managed to reach a point 200 yards from the shore of the harbour. They suffered heavy casualties from concentrated machinegun and artillery fire. Then they had to fight a rearguard action back to Enogai, taking with them 100 stretcher cas~s and walking wounded. During the retreat food and ammunition were dropped to them by parachute. Now strengthened with reinforcements, the Marines are again attacking.
