DETROIT RACE RIOTS
CAUSED BY FALSE REPORT New York. Aug. 11. The race riots in Detroit on June 21 in which 34 persons were killed and 800 injured, were not planned, not premeditated, and not inspired by subversive enemy influence. This is the finding of a committee which investigated the disturbances. The committee found that the looting and rioting followed several disconnected incidents. They were primarily provoked. by a false rumour that whites had killed a coloured woman and her child. White and negro youths were the principal rioters, but both gangs lacked preconceived or premeditated organisation. The Census Bureau reveals that the negro population of the cities and larger towns has increased 23 per cent, since 1939-40 owing to the migration of nearly 1,000,000 workers from rural and small-town areas. The total negro population is now nearing 12,500,000. Atlantic City, with 24 per cent, negroes, has the highest proportion of any northern city.
