INCREASED POWER FOR GESTAPO
NO SCRUPLES FOR HIMMLER Recd. 9.10 p.m. London, Aug. 24. Reliable commentators in London and on the German frontier interpret Himmler's appointment as a tightening up of national discipline, increasled power for the Gestapo, and mor.? ruthless measures against waverers, grumblers and doubters. | The Daily Mail's special correspondent, Ward Price, says: “This increase lin Himmler's powers shows that 'Hitler fears trouble inside Germany, jHe has not taken this step except | under pressure of a real emergency, lit is certain to cause resentment I among Goering and the generals who are already jealous of Himmler's powers. Himmler’s position is now the most powerful in Germany after Hitler's own." The Times, in a leader, says: “If more rigorous action is contemplated to steel the civilian population and I repress further mutterings of in--1 subordination and revolt. Himmler ■can be trusted, perhaps more surely ! than the other Nazi gangsters, tj be deferred by no scruples.”
